ELEMENTARY

Physical Education: Early Childhood Education Program

 

As a result of the Pan American School Physical Education program, students will: (1) participate in physical activities which enhance physical growth and development; (2) evaluate current levels of physical fitness; (3) develop and maintain an optimum level of physical fitness; (4) develop knowledge, attitudes and abilities which promote life long physical fitness; (5) develop movement competencies and specific sport skills commensurate with individual potential; (6) develop positive social skills; (7) enhance self-image; (8) acquire self-discipline; (9) and participate in physical activities that enhance the development of creative talent.

 

Performance Based Objectives

 

In the Early Childhood Education Program, the learner will:

·         Identify body parts.

·         Walk, run and jump at a variety of speeds and levels of force.

·         View and accurately imitate a variety of basic movement patterns and exercises.

·         Demonstrate, while performing a variety of movements, coordination between arms and legs.

·         Execute simple exercises.

·         Execute simple gymnastic patterns.

·         Perform exercises singularly, in pairs, and in groups.

·         Follow varying rhythms while clapping hands.

·         Catch, hit and throw a ball.

·         Bounce a ball in a sustained manner.

·         Participate cooperatively in group games.

·         Manipulate a wide variety of small apparatus.

·         Perform circle and singing games.

·         Form a group circle and line.

·         Safely utilize large play apparatus.

 

 

Physical Education: Grades 1- 2

 

As a result of the Pan American School Physical Education program, students will: (1) participate in physical activities which enhance physical growth and development; (2) evaluate current levels of physical fitness; (3) develop and maintain an optimum level of physical fitness; (4) develop knowledge, attitudes and abilities which promote life long physical fitness; (5) develop movement competencies and specific sport skills commensurate with individual potential; (6) develop positive social skills; (7) enhance self-image; (8) acquire self-discipline; (9) and participate in physical activities that enhance the development of creative talent.

 

Performance Based Objectives

 

In 1st and 2nd grade, the learner will:

·         Perform basic tests for full evaluation of physical fitness.

·         Demonstrate a basic understanding of the importance of fitness and exercise.

·         Demonstrate continual development of basic movement, including agility, balance and coordination.

·         Demonstrate development of manipulative skills using a variety of small and large objects.

·         Perform a variety of sport “lead-up” skills, including throwing, catching and kicking.

·         Perform a running long-jump.

·         Perform basic gymnastic mat stunts, including individual and paired balances, forward and backward roll.

 

Physical Education: Grades 3 -5

 

As a result of the Pan American School Physical Education program, students will: (1) participate in physical activities which enhance physical growth and development; (2) evaluate current levels of physical fitness; (3) develop and maintain an optimum level of physical fitness; (4) develop knowledge, attitudes and abilities which promote life long physical fitness; (5) develop movement competencies and specific sport skills commensurate with individual potential; (6) develop positive social skills; (7) enhance self-image; (8) acquire self-discipline; (9) and participate in physical activities that enhance the development of creative talent.

 

Performance Based Objectives

 

In grades 3 - 5, the learner will:

·         Participate successfully in a variety of low-organization, high-cooperation recreational games.

·         Perform a variety of gymnastic mat stunts and balances.

·         Successfully participate in sport lead-up games for volleyball, softball, basketball and handball.

·         Demonstrate basic mastery of the fundamental skills for volleyball, softball, basketball, handball and swimming.

·         Demonstrate a basic understanding of sport rules and officiating.

·         Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of dance forms to include: Brazilian folk, jazz, Bahian folk and North American square, round and line dances.

 

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL

 

Physical Education: Middle School (Grades 6-8)

 

As a result of the Pan American School Physical Education program, students will: (1) participate in physical activities which enhance physical growth and development; (2) evaluate current levels of physical fitness;(3) develop and maintain an optimum level of physical fitness; (4) develop knowledge, attitudes and abilities which promote life long physical fitness; (5) develop movement competencies and specific sport skills commensurate with individual potential; (6) develop positive social skills; (7) enhance self-image; (8) acquire self-discipline; (9) and participate in physical activities which enhance the development of creative talent.

 

Performance Based Objectives

 

In grades 6 – 8, the learner will:

·         Successfully perform a variety of rhythmic exercises.

·         Successfully perform a variety of mat and gymnastic exercises.

·         Successfully perform specific warm-up and preparatory exercises.

·         Demonstrate refinement of the basic skills intrinsic to: track and field, volleyball, soccer, indoor soccer, basketball, softball, team handball, floor hockey and aerobics.

·         Successfully apply the basic skills of volleyball, soccer, indoor soccer, basketball, softball, floor hockey and team handball in controlled competitive situations.

·         Demonstrate basic mastery of skills intrinsic to recreational games to include: frisbee, badminton and paddleball.

·         Demonstrate a heightened level of personal fitness.

·         Demonstrate an understanding of basic exercise physiology and the effects of exercise on the human body.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

Physical Education: High School (Grades 9 – 12)

 

As a result of the Pan American School Physical Education program, students will: (1) participate in physical activities which enhance physical growth and development; (2) evaluate current levels of physical fitness;(3) develop and maintain an optimum level of physical fitness; (4) develop knowledge, attitudes and abilities which promote life long physical fitness; (5) develop movement competencies and specific sport skills commensurate with individual potential; (6) develop positive social skills; (7) enhance self-image; (8) acquire self-discipline; (9) and participate in physical activities which enhance the development of creative talent.

 

Performance Based Objectives

 

In grades 9 – 12, the learner will:

·         Research sport and exercise topics to include history, regulations, and current trends/philosophies.

·         Demonstrate mastery, at a level commensurate with individual abilities: free-style, breast, back and butterfly swim strokes.

·         Demonstrate a refinement and mastery at a level commensurate with individual abilities - those basic skills intrinsic to volleyball, softball, soccer, indoor soccer, basketball, flag football and team handball.

·         Demonstrate an ability to utilize, at a basic level, more sophisticated intermediate and advanced skill techniques in the above-mentioned sports.

·         Accurately evaluate current levels of fitness and design appropriate programs for improving areas of weakness.

·         Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of establishing and maintaining an active life-style in adulthood.
